Review : IAF 2016 / Is Gupta period in decline ?/ Editor-in-Chief JohnyML
Like in village fairs people expect certain attractions such as Mauth Ka Kuan and the sword swallowing man, in art fairs people expect certain well known names. For example Subodh Gupta and Shilpa Gupta. In a way people asking for names is one symptom of the success of the concerned artists. But then if the names fail to satisfy the demands and expectations should that be a problem of the artists?
Those who look out for Subodh Gupta’s bartans(vessels) may meet with some kind of disappointment. But Gupta has not failed to surprise with his small sculptural installations at the Italy based gallery Continua’ booth that invites people to the fair with the works of the heavyweights like Michelangelo Pistoletto, Daniel Burin, Shilpa Gupta and Subodh.
On the other side you have Nature Morte gallery with some consolation for the Gupta fans. This gallery has a typical metal cast of a cycle with banana bunches (north south mix ?) and a compressed bartan sculpture.
Can the exorbitant prices of the Gupta works be one reason for the galleries not to present his chrome finished steel bartan works? Or over exposure has done the damage already?
More soon from the IAF 2016..
